nxConstraints - Connection Birth

A connection layer whose springs are generated once, at particle birth.

Nearby particles are linked at birth and the springs hold them at that spacing for the rest of the sim, so a cloud of particles behaves like a soft body. Add it from the + menu in the nxConstraints Layers list, then select the layer to show these settings.

Sets how much this layer contributes to the overall constraint solution. With a single layer this can be left at its default, 100%. When you combine several layers, lower it to blend the connections in more gently, or raise it above 100% to give them more influence.

When on, connections are only made between particles born at the same time. Off by default.

The maximum number of connections each particle can make. Defaults to 8, up to a maximum of 64. Higher limits make a denser, stiffer web but lengthen simulation times.

The distance between two particles must be less than this value for a connection to be made at birth. Defaults to 0.4m. A larger radius links particles that start farther apart.

How strong each connection is. Raise it to make the springs stiffer, lower it to make them looser. Defaults to 80%.

For more tension than 100% Stiffness alone can give, raise the Iterations value in the Object Properties.

Stops connections from being made to particles closer than this distance. This controls clumping, so a particle does not just connect to its very closest neighbors. Defaults to 0m.

Sets how a connection breaks, if at all. A broken connection is removed, and the two particles are no longer linked. Set as Relative Connected, by default. The other options are None, Relative Radius and Absolute.

  • None: connections never break.
  • Relative Connected: the Break value is a percentage of the length the connection had when it formed. If the spring stretches beyond that, it snaps.
  • Relative Radius: the Break value is a percentage of the Radius setting. If the spring stretches beyond that, it snaps.
  • Absolute: the connection breaks once it is longer than the Break Above distance.

The break threshold used in the Relative Connected and Relative Radius modes, as a percentage. Defaults to 50%. It is unavailable in the None and Absolute modes.
